Help Unlock the Second Prison!

To the ideology of giving second chances because we too were given it.

Yellow Ribbon

Last Sat while we were out at Suntec with a bunch of friends, a student approached us to support the Yellow Ribbon Project. Without hesitations we each bought a yellow ribbon.

If I ever start a company and become an employer there certainly won’t be a “tick-here-if-you-have-a-criminal-record” box and any of that kind of stuff.

  1. I employed an ex-convict & he stole 60k from the company. I believe its a rare case & i’ll still employ ex-convicts but will be more careful if they have to handle money.

  2. I still think it’s important to find out if the person you’re hiring has ever served time and for what reasons, otherwise you’ll be putting your company and yourself at risk. Doing a complete background check (as long as it’s relevant to the employment) is essential. It doesn’t mean you’re passing judgment on the applicant, it just means you’re taking measures to protect your company and your other employees.

By omitting the past offenses question, it is sending out a message to the public that committing a crime is alright. As long as his/her past criminal record doesn’t sway your decision to hire him/her, then you’re giving this person a second chance. Of course, it also depends on the type of offense committed. If it is espionage or stealing company funds for personal reasons then of course it will affect your decision to employ the ex-convict - and it really isn’t wrong to judge based on that.

you’re running a business, not doing charity. :)

ok just my 2 cents worth.

  3. Every company needs to be wary of spying, cheating and the likes, and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves. I believe any employee could cheat the company not just those with past offenses.

I just don’t believe that one should pay forever, for a mistake made. The person has already paid for that mistake by serving term and/or paying fine, and since it’s paid I feel we should let it pass.

And btw, saying I will omit the past offenses question as an employer in no way suggest I support or think crime is right. :)

  4. well as far as i am concerned, i would at least wanna know abt the person. i cant jus blindfolded hire a person.. a bit abt their background.. and also if they have a crime tag.. and then based on the crime nature and the circumstances, maybe then i would make my decision..
